What's In The Excess Levy?

The Harrison County Board of Education has ordered an election for November 5, 2024, to allow voters to decide on the renewal of the current operating levy for the fiscal years 2026-2027 through 2030-2031. This levy is crucial in continuing funding for various essential educational and extracurricular programs, facility improvements, and student support initiatives.

The Board has determined that current authorized levies under Article 9, Chapter 11 of the West Virginia Code are insufficient to cover necessary expenses. The continuation of the levy will fund the following purposes, with approximate annual amounts:

The total funding needed per fiscal year is approximately $34,996,278. The levy rates per $100 of assessed property valuation are 18.81 cents for Class I, 37.61 cents for Class II, and 75.22 cents for both Class III and IV properties.

The election will follow general election laws, with public notice provided in two newspapers prior to the vote. Voters will have the option to vote "For the Levies" or "Against the Levies" by marking the appropriate box on the ballot.

The funds raised by the levy will support ongoing educational programs and facility improvements to ensure a high-quality learning environment for Harrison County students. By renewing the levy, the community ensures continued support for vital services that benefit both students and the broader county community.
